For Peace and Reconciliation
George Weah has finally dropped his claim to have won last month's Liberian presidential race. In the midst of claims of election fraud, Weah's supporters (many ex-combatants) have been protesting and threatening much more in a fragile country.
The BBC reports:
The move will allow the inauguration of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as Africa's first elected woman head of state.
"Our decision is based on our desire to see the Liberian people achieve durable and genuine peace," Weah told reporters.
Mr Weah said his decision to drop his allegations of electoral fraud would give Liberians " the opportunity to carry on the business of national recovery and redemption in an atmosphere of tranquility", Reuters reports.
The inauguration will take place in January and hopefully Liberians will be able to continue to move ahead in "redemption and national recovery".
